So we finally decided on bridesmaid dresses, and I tell you what, we searched high and low for a beautiful dress and a GREAT deal. Lucky for me Brides by Demetrios in Altamonte Springs FL (, had an amazing Eden Bridals selection, talk about beautiful selection and colors. You want to find an awesome dress? Go there. Which is better to use fondant or buttercream icing?
When shopping for your wedding cake and cakes for any other occasion, the question arises: “Which is better to use fondant or buttercream icing?” To answer this question let’s first figure out what’s what.
Rolled Fondant is commonly used to decorate wedding cakes. It includes gelatin (or agar in vegetarian recipes) and food-grade glycerine, which keep the sugar pliable and creates a dough-like consistency. Rolled fondant is rolled out like a pie crust and used to cover the cake. This gives the cakes a smooth appearance. Fondant holds in moisture better keeping your cake fresher longer and the cakes do not require refrigeration. It creates a beautiful smooth, clean look to your cake; something a butter cream covered cake can be hard to achieve. However, fondant lacks in the taste department, as it tends to be made simply of sugar and water.
Buttercream is a cake icing and filling made from creamed butter, powerder sugar, and with other fats. It is popular opinion that this particular icing is the more appealing of the two choices in the cake department, however has a tendency to melt in warm conditions and requires refrigeration in order for it to maintain its shape. Also, Buttercream does not have the consistency to support molding so sometimes it limits design options.
Both icings have their pros and cons, it’s up to you what you’d like to weigh in on more. I know for a fact that our particular vendor that will be making our wedding cake, has derived a compromise: they frost the cake with buttercream before covering it with the smooth fondant. This way you have the best of both worlds! You should speak with your vendor to discuss options!
